F.A.Q

For a Clinical, Counselling or Educational psychologist to be practicing in South Africa, he or she needs to be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the Board of Healthcare Funders to get a practice number. Registration at the Practice Code Numbering System enables him or her to claim directly from your medical aid. The psychologists at our practice are all registered at the above mentioned organizations. Johan and Karlien are registered at these institutions as well as at the New Zealand Psychology Board.

This purely depends on who you will feel more comfortable with. If you are uncertain and need more guidance who you need to make an appointment with, you are welcome to phone our rooms and talk to one of our psychologists. A general guideline may be to look at relationships in your life and people of authority and becoming aware who you identify with better. It is also important to take this into account when making an appointment for both you and your spouse, in the case of couples or marriage counseling. Remain sensitive to the needs and likes of your spouse, especially when you need buy-inn from him/her.

We use Electronic Fund Transfers and you can claim back from your medical fund. 

Each psychologist at our offices is contracted out and this means that you will have to pay for the session directly after. However, you will be provided with a statement directly after the session you can send in to your medical fund and claim the amount back they would be paying. We however still recommend that you confirm with your medical aid what your benefits for psychological services are. Often this type of service is deducted from your day to day savings account. If your medical fund does not provide any benefits for psychotherapy, payment remains your responsibility.

Our fees for psychotherapy are based on the guidelines for psychotherapy and are annually adjusted to these guidelines. The fee for 2020 for the standard 51-60 min session is R1100 in South Africa. For someone enquiring from New Zealand please contact us for the latest session cost. You will have to pay for each session after the session via EFT or direct transfer and we  shall provide you with a statement to claim back from your medical fund for reimbursement. 

This is difficult to predict as it differs from person to person and situation to situation. We suggest that you prepare yourself for a few sessions and believe that you yourself will know when you are ready to terminate therapy. We will also give you guidance during your process. Remember that the process is often described as somewhat challenging and difficult due to the change or process of growth. Therapy sessions at our rooms, usually happen weekly. Intervals between sessions held at hospitals may be shorter, depending on the situation, condition, further availability and the need of the patient.

A therapy session at our rooms usually has a duration of between 51-60 minutes. We also do consultations at most major hospitals in and around Pretoria when a patient is admitted in a hospital and is in need of psychotherapy or support while being admitted. These sessions can be shorter, depending on the circumstances.

Contact us via email, whatsap or Linkedin and we shall schedule an appointment with you at a time that suits you. You will have to fill in a consent form that will be forwarded to you before the start of the first session.  It is not necessary to be formally referred by a doctor. 

Should we provide sessions whilst you are admitted in hospital,  for coping with the effects of the medical procedure or help deal with anxiety of stress before or after the procedures we need a formal referral letter from your physician. These sessions are normally covered by your medical fund as part of treatment during hospitalization. The suggested fees for sessions in hospital and after hours are higher. It is thus important to make sure about the limitations of your medical fund.

Surely a simple, Yes, everyone needs a psychologist from time to time! will not do. Seeing a psychologist does not mean that one is mad, out of your mind, have lost it completely or that you have got a psychological problem. On the contrary, it may indicate that you have got "guts" to address things that you find difficult in your life or that you have got vision and want to achieve more than now. Although we also deal with more 'heavy' stuff like trauma, depression, anxiety, personality disorders and other clinical disorders, we mostly see 'normal' people with everyday difficulties for which they want some or other solution, redefinition or different perspective.

Psychology has changed from a predominantly pathogenic focus to also include many elements of positive psychology.

Thus, not only looking at what is wrong in a person's life, but also at what is right and how to utilize that to reach your full potential.
